Bouquet Garni is a traditional French seasoning blend and gives a robust flavor to any soup, stock, or stew. It’s often prepared with fresh ingredients that are tied together with a string, however it is also appropriate to bind them together using a sachet or tea strainer as suggested here. This is a generic recipe, however it can be very versatile, using peppercorns, tarragon, basil, or parsley. By altering the herbs you will provide varying flavors. These herb blends, although a small part of any recipe, add not only flavor, but also nutritional bioactive compounds that can boost the immune system and decrease inflammation.
Bouquet Garni
- 1/4 cup dried parsley
- 4 bay leaves, crushed
- 2 Tbsp dried thyme
- 2 Tbsp marjoram
- 2 Tbsp rosemary
- Mix the herbs together.
- Place 1 Tbsp in a muslin bag, a fine cheese cloth or butter muslin, or a tea strainer. If using a cheese cloth cut a 4 inch square and tie the four corners of the bag up with kitchen string. Leave the string long enough for so it can be tied to the handle of the pot to be removed easily.
- Store the herb mixture in a jar with a tight fitting lid.
